How can you turn a nightmare into a magical moment? Well, you have to be in Scotland… and in danger.
The Cluetts and their four children decided to leave London for the summer and stay in a small cottage on the south shore of Loch Eilt. There were no roads to the cottage, just a long footpath around the lake. They knew the kids would not manage to walk that far, so they decided to hire a boat and get to their destination by crossing the lake. They arrived safely and made themselves at home.
For a few days everything was perfect, but then disaster happened. “One morning, our daughter woke us up and said there was water around the house. It turned out that the area was flooded and our boat was gone,” the Cluetts later told a newspaper reporter.
The family wanted to get back to their car, but the footpath was underwater and walking along the railway track which ran nearby was too dangerous. They had no idea how to get to their car on the other side of the lake. In the end, the Cluetts thought that the only option was to phone the police and ask them for help. And the police came up with an unbelievable solution. They arranged for the next train on the railway line near their cottage to make an unscheduled stop.
The family quickly packed up their belongings and made their way to the railway line. “We left the cottage at the same time as the train was coming around the bend. The train was getting closer and closer so we started running as fast as we could,” the Cluetts said. The amazing thing was that it wasn’t just any train. It was the Harry Potter Hogwarts Express which travels up and down that line. “When the kids saw the train coming, all the worry left their faces and was replaced with happiness and excitement,” Mr Cluett explained.
The family were dropped off at the next stop, at Lochailort, from where the Cluetts were able to get to their car. “It was a real adventure. The kids will never forget this holiday. And a big thanks to everyone who helped us,” Mr Cluett added.

One stormy evening an elderly couple looking for a room for the night arrived at the Belle Vue Hotel in Philadelphia. It was raining heavily so they hurried in.
“Could you give us a room?” the elderly man asked.
The clerk, a friendly young man, explained that there were three international conferences in town and not a single hotel had rooms available.
“All the guest rooms are taken,” the clerk said.
“But I can’t send you out into the rain. Would you like to sleep in my room? It’s not very big but you’ll be comfortable there. And don’t worry about me. I can sleep in the reception area. You have no option but to stay here. You might not even get a taxi to the station in this kind of weather,” the clerk told them and the couple agreed. The next morning the elderly man offered some money for the room, but the clerk refused to take it. “I didn’t do it for money. I just wanted to help you,” the clerk said.
“You are the person who should be the manager of the best hotel in the world. If I built a great hotel, would you come and join me?” the elderly man asked.
The clerk did not take the offer seriously and just laughed. “If you build one, I certainly will, Sir. And now, your taxi is waiting,” he replied.
Two years passed. The clerk had been promoted and had forgotten about the incident. But one day he received a letter from the elderly man inviting him to visit New York. Inside the envelope there was also a train ticket.
The clerk was curious, so he asked his boss for 3 days off. When the employer agreed, the clerk sent a reply informing the elderly man about his decision. The elderly man met him in New York, and led him to the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. He then pointed to a huge new building there, with towers reaching up into the sky.
“That,” said the elderly man, “is the hotel I have just built for you to manage.”
“You must be joking,” the young man said.
“I am not. I hired the best architects to design it and I need the best manager to run it,” he replied.
The elderly man’s name was William Waldorf, one of the richest men in New York, and that magnificent structure was the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, at the time one of the best hotels in the world. The young clerk was George C. Boldt. He ran the hotel for the next 23 years.
